DESCRIPTION & ITINERARY:
Caracol stands as the largest and most significant Maya site in Belize. Extensive excavation and archeological research started in 1985 during which the importance of Caracol became evident - establishing Caracol to reign as the supreme Maya City through the discovery of a major victory over Tikal.

We lead you through a comprehensive tour of this amazing Maya site where you will learn of recent discoveries from archeological groups conducting current excavation, and continue to unearth the histories of the past.

The day starts of departing local partner headquarters in San Ignacio. We set off at 7:30 a.m. driving through the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, moving into subtropical rainforest where bird species is abundant. The drive to Caracol is a jungle experience of its own lasting for two hours. Upon reaching the site of Caracol, you will receive a guided tour where you will learn about the ancient Maya. After touring the excavated portion of the site, we have a hearty healthy lunch at one of the picnic sheds provided by the park. We then make our way back through the Mountain Pine Ridge where clients will enjoy visiting a lush and quaint cave (Rio Frio Cave) and swimming at the Rio On Pools. This is a �combo tour� that clients will enjoy. From here we return to San Ignacio at around 5:00 p.m. I like Caracol more than Tikal because it is less touristy; very somber: it is more spiritual and intimate.
